Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) and Engie are among the bidders for Orsted’s European onshore wind business, according to reports.

The Danish and French groups are considering a deal for the Orsted onshore assets that went on the block earlier this year, said the Bloomberg financial news agency citing unnamed sources familiar with the process.
The European turbine assets spanning Ireland, the UK and Germany could fetch about €1bn ($1.2bn), according to Bloomberg.

Reports that Orsted planned to sell about 800MW of onshore wind emerged earlier this year as part of efforts by the Danish group to stabilise its financial position and raise funds for its offshore build-out.

Orsted’s big move in European onshore came in 2021 when it bought the Irish business of Brookfield Renewable, at the time consisting of 389MW operating and under construction, 149MW in advanced development and a 1GW development pipeline.

The Danish group was at the time in expansionary mode on land but has since restated its global focus on offshore wind as it retrenched following multiple setbacks in the US offshore market.

Even if it sold its Irish onshore wind, Orsted would still very much be part of the picture in Ireland after winning a major offshore tender there.

Final bids for the onshore wind assets are reportedly due this week.

Engie has already done onshore business with Orsted after agreeing a 2024 deal to buy French turbine and solar assets from the Danish group.

Engie was contacted for comment by Recharge. CIP declined to comment when contacted.
